Bartram Trail’s Wallace Branch to William’s Pulpit

Length: 4.1 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Elevation change: 1,085 feet

Bartram Trail’s Wallace Branch to William’s Pulpit is the fourth section of the Bartram Trail. This out-and-back trail is moderately difficult and features a cascading waterfall and great views of the Nantahala Mountains.

The hike out is all uphill, but easy to follow. William's Pulpit is a 100-foot long rock shelf that is accessed via a short connector trail. It overlooks the Nantahala Mountains' Mill Creek Valley. The views from here definitely make the hike worthwhile.

Access to the trail is easy. It's a short drive off U.S. Highway 64. However, parking is limited to about six cars, so get there early.

Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed.

Huckleberry Knob Trail

Length: 2.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Elevation change: 331 feet

Huckleberry Knob Trail is one of the easiest hikes in our area. This out-and-back trail is actually an old forest service road with very little elevation gain. However, Huckleberry Knob is the highest peak in the Unicoi Mountains (elevation is 5,580 feet), and the 360-degree views from it are amazing. You'll be able to see mountains in southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, and northeastern Georgia.

Access to Huckleberry Knob Trail is a breeze. Simply pull into the parking lot at Mile Marker 8 off Cherohala Skyway. Following the Huckleberry Knob Trail is just as easy as finding it. The trail starts with a short uphill hike to Oak Knob, heads downhill into a forest, and finally goes back uphill to Huckleberry Knob.

If you plan hiking Huckleberry Knob Trail, you'll want to keep a few things in mind. First, parking space at Mile Marker 8 is very limited (four spaces). Arrive early to make sure you get a spot. Also, it seems that a few wild hogs inhabit the area, and those hogs are aggressive. Even though leashed dogs are allowed, you might want to leave them at home. Finally, give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the views from Huckleberry Knob. This is clearly one of the prettiest locations in our area.

Wayah Bald via Appalachian Trail

Length: 8.6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Elevation change: 2,014 feet

Wayah Bald via the Appalachian Trail is a moderately difficult out-and-back trail that leads to a beautiful stone lookout tower at the Wayah Bald summit. The trail starts where Wayah Road intersects the Appalachian Trail. You'll see a small gravel parking lot at the trailhead. You should find an empty spot if you get there early enough.

The hike up Wayah Bald is actually easier than the elevation gain indicates. The trail's in good shape, with few rocky sections, and the grade never becomes particularly steep. Sections of the trail run through dense hardwood forests. Other sections travel along the mountainside, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

With an elevation of 5,342 feet, Wayah Bald is the second highest peak in the Nantahala Mountains. The three-story stone lookout tower at the summit adds another 53 feet of elevation, making this location the highest point in the immediate area. From the top of the tower you'll have unobstructed 360-degree views of the Nantahala Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the rolling hills of Georgia. If you have a choice of when to hike this trail, try May through early June, when wildflowers cover the area.

Leashed dogs are allowed on this trail.

Wesser Bald Fire Tower

Length: 2.8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Elevation change: 718 feet

Wesser Bald Fire Tower via the Appalachian Trail is a somewhat difficult out-and-back hike that leads to fantastic 360-degree views of the Nantahala National Forest. The trail starts just off Tellico Road, runs through dense hardwood forest, and ends at the fire tower on the summit of Wesser Bald.

There is a steady incline throughout the hike, but numerous switchbacks keep it from being too demanding. Climbing the fire tower is easy, and its wooden observation platform is well above the treeline. From the deck, views of the surrounding mountains are simply stunning. This hike is especially enjoyable when colors are changing in the fall.

Dogs are allowed in the trail, but must be leashed.

Sheffield Mine

Sheffield Mine is one of the first places you might think to go gem mining. They offer an extensive and comprehensive list of mining options. With your admission, you’ll uncover two buckets of stone, dirt, gravel, and hopefully, gems.

After you’ve finished the hands-on mining expedition, you can wander inside and learn the history of some of the ruby mines in Franklin, NC.

This rustic mine offers a fun day of gem mining throughout the year. You can find many rare gems on the premises, including the rare Rhodolite, Ruby, Sapphire, and Moonstone rocks. They offer cold drinks, snacks, restrooms and mining equipment to help you on your excavation endeavors.

You can purchase gems from the property online, including earrings, setpieces, and rings.

Cherokee Ruby and Sapphire Mine

Price: $35 a person

The Cherokee Mine is the only facility in town that allows you to get down in the mines to carve your own path. You won’t be handed mining buckets here, but you’ll instead be able to walk through certain sections of the property to search for gems.

It can be a physically demanding process, and it’s not what everybody might want from their mining experience, but Cherokee Mine offers the most authentic ruby mining adventure in town.

This is a cash-only facility. They don’t take cards or checks.

Rose Creek Mine

Address: 115 Terrace Ridge Dr, Franklin, NC

Hours: 9AM - 5PM

Price: $15 per bucket, $5 per refill

Rose Creek Mine offers many bucket options just like Sheffield Mine. This mine is geared toward younger kids. Enhanced buckets can range in price from $25-$400 per bucket. The bigger the bucket, the bigger the chance you’ll have at picking out some gems. Group rates are available for giant families or tourist groups.

Do you want the gems without the labor? You can buy a bag at the onsite store. Each bag will contain rubies, sapphires, garnets, or a mix of all these sparkly guys.

There are plenty of pull-off opportunities with overlooks, hiking trails alongside the road, and opportunities to see native wildlife.

Be sure to pack your patience when visiting Cades Cove. During peak season, it can take up to 4 hours to complete the 11 mile loop.

Tuckaleechee Caverns

Not all of the major attractions here are above ground. Tuckaleechee Caverns is one of the coolest places to explore in the Great Smoky Mountains. The cave has a rich history with a main chamber bigger than a football field. You’ll be able to see all sorts of fascinating cave formations in this subterranean expedition. The caverns’ underground waterfalls are truly unforgettable.

The Place of a Thousand Drips

The Gatlinburg waterfalls are yet another exciting and different thing to see at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Place of a Thousand Drips is a must-see waterfall during the rainy season as the high rocks and small cave produce an amazing cascade from 30 feet high. The interesting carvings created by the water over time are interesting and beautiful.

The Sinks

This waterfall has the clearest water you’ll see in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Sinks is a cool place to dip your toes in after a long hike. It’s not recommended you swim here due to strong currents, and you should not try to go cliff jumping from the bridge or nearby rocks.

What makes the Sinks a must-see attraction in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is they are one of the only falls you can drive to in the park.

Great Smoky Mountains Hiking Trails

One of the main reasons people love the Great Smoky Mountains is for its endless exploration opportunities. Take a look at these popular trails. While we’d love to go into all of the different waterfalls in the area: Mingo Falls , Laurel Falls , and Indian Flats Falls , we want to highlight the main hikes people come here for.

Clingmans Dome

Distance: 1.3 miles
Difficulty: Moderate

Hike to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Clingmans Dome is a challenging yet satisfying hike for everyone who tries it. You’ll have the grandest view of the park from the observation tower on the summit. On a clear day, you can see as far as 100 miles in any direction from the tower. Clingmans Dome is also the best place in the park to catch the sunset.

While it’s a short trail on paper it’s very steep, and it can take you a while to scale. Luckily, the whole trail is paved and there are benches along the way for breaks.

Alum Cave Trail

Dogs: Not allowed

The Alum Cave is one of the most popular trails in the park. Myrtle Point will allow you to peer out over a sea of autumn leaves. Arch Rock is a neat rock formation that you more commonly see out west, and the caves are just fun to walk around in. Every mile is an adventure and feels like it offers a new experience.

While Rainbow Falls isn’t the biggest waterfall in the park, the trail up to it is one of the most fulfilling and popular experiences people try when they come to the Smoky Mountains. It’s a gradual uphill the whole way, so make sure to bring some water and don’t be afraid to take breaks if you need them.

Get to Know Nantahala National Forest

Nantahala National Forest is North Carolina's largest national forest, covering over 531,000 acres of the state’s southwest corner. It's also the second wettest region in the United States, averaging close to 50 inches of rainfall a year. The forest is characterized by deep valleys and gorges, and much of the forest floor only gets sunlight during mid-day. Elevation ranges from 1,200 feet along the Tusquitee River to 5,800 feet at Lone Bald. Nantahala National Forest contains parts of three massive wilderness areas and is home to a number of major trails, scenic lakes, and majestic waterfalls. Because of its size, the forest is divided into three ranger districts.

Wilderness Areas

Three wilderness areas are part of Nantahala National Forest.

Ellicott Rock Wilderness
Southern Nantahala Wilderness
Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness

Ellicott Rock Wilderness is located where North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia meet, at the southern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The wilderness area spans 8,274 acres, with almost 3,400 acres located in Nantahala National Forest. The area is characterized by dense hardwood forests and very rugged terrain.

Southern Nantahala Wilderness covers 23,365 acres on the North Carolina and Georgia border, with over 11,700 acres in the Nantahala National Forest. This wilderness area is known for its steep mountains and strenuous trails, including over 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail.

Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness is a massive 17,394-acre area that runs from western North Carolina into eastern Tennessee. The area is home to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and to Slickrock Creek Trail, one of the country's most difficult hiking trails.

Hiking Trails

Two major hiking trails that run through the Nantahala National Forest are the Appalachian Trail and the Bartram Trail. The section of the Appalachian Trail in the forest starts near the Nantahala River and goes to the Georgia border. The Bartram Trail also has a section that starts around the Nantahala River. It then travels upward over 3,000 feet to the top of Cheoah Bald.

Popular trails in our part of Nantahala National Forest are Bartram Trail’s Wallace Branch to William’s Pulpit, Wayah Bald via Appalachian Trail, and Wesser Bald Fire Tower via Appalachian Trail.

Waterfalls

Nantahala National Forest is filled with stunning waterfalls, including the following.

Glen Falls
Bridal Veil Falls
Schoolhouse Falls

However, Whitewater Falls is arguably the most impressive of all the forest’s waterfalls. This upper portion of this cascading waterfall drops 411 feet, making it the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. After that, the lower section drops another 400 feet, ending up in South Carolina.

If you’re wanting to visit an impressive waterfall closer to us, try Rufus Morgan Falls. This 70-foot waterfall is a short drive away, just west of Franklin, North Carolina.

Lakes

Nantahala National Forest has 15 beautiful lakes. Two of the most popular lakes, Nantahala Lake and Santeetlah Lake, are close to us. Nantahala Lake features crystal clear waters, 42 miles of shoreline, and some of the best fishing in North Carolina. Santeetlah Lake, near Robbinsville, North Carolina, is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. This pristine, unspoiled lake covers about 3,000 acres and has 76 miles of shoreline. It’s a great place to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.

Ranger Districts

Nantahala National Forest has three ranger districts.

Tusquitee Ranger District
Nantahala Ranger District
Cheoah Ranger District

Tusquitee Ranger District, located mainly in Clay and Cherokee counties, is Nantahala National Forest’s western-most district. It’s responsible for the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and is home to the Valley River Mountains. The district’s headquarters are in Murphy, North Carolina.

Nantahala Ranger District is the largest of the three districts, stretching across Macon, Jackson and Swain counties. Prominent locations in this district are Nantahala Gorge and Wayah Bald.

It’s headquartered in Franklin, North Carolina.

Cheoah Ranger District, located in Graham and Swain Counties, contains four mountain reservoirs, dozens of mountain peaks, numerous streams, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails. This district is home to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and the Cherohala Skyway. The district’s headquarters are in Robbinsville, North Carolina.

If you don’t want to take a boat out yourself, you can always work with one of the local charters surrounding Lake Nantahala. There’s a handful of people on the lake who would be more than happy to take you on a guided tour of the lake. Some may even know the best fishing locations!

Nantahala Lake Scenic Overlook (H2)

If all you want to do is look at the lake, consider driving to the Nantahala Lake Scenic Overlook and getting some excellent pictures. The gorgeous road offers an impressive view of the mountains, lakes, and foliage common to the area.

This is close to many awesome hikes just off the Appalachian Trail hike, so it makes for a fun day near the lake if you don’t want to get in the water. Check out the best hikes in the area on another page.

Blue Ridge Parkway, nicknamed “America’s Favorite Drive,” carves its way through the heart of the Appalachians in North Carolina and Virginia. Countless overlooks, historic sites, and hikes await those who embark on one of the nation’s most beautiful scenic drives.

The Cherohala Skyway winds through western North Carolina into Tennessee through untouched Appalachian forest. Named as one of the Discovery Channel’s “Top Ten Motorcycle Rides in North America,” this two-lane highway boasts more than 300 turns and curves spread over 50 miles, making this drive as fun as it is beautiful.

While the Cherohala Skyway is most popular among bikers, the road is open to everyone and is just as amazing on four wheels as it is on two. If you decide to explore one of North Carolina’s best-kept secrets, make sure you stop at these highlights to make the most of your time here.

Hooper Bald

Hooper Bald is one of the highest points along the Cherohala Skyway. This quiet and open meadow is surrounded by azalea trees and is a great place to soak in some crisp and clean mountain air.

Widely regarded as one of the most spectacular falls in the region, it’s worth your time to take a detour off the Skyway to see this waterfall up close. The tiered waterfall with a 90 foot drop into the rocky riverbed is mesmerizing. The falls can be viewed from the bridge, or you can walk underneath for a closer view.

Highway 64 | Waterfall Byway

Distance: 95.5 miles
Drive Time: 2 hours, 14 minutes

Highway 64 is North Carolina’s longest numbered road, traversing the entire state from the Tennessee border to the Atlantic Ocean. Nicknamed “Waterfall Byway,” the highway meanders through miles of forested mountains that are teeming with waterfalls. While we don’t have time to go over all the waterfalls you should stop and see along the way, here’s a quick list of our top three stops.

Bust Your Butt Falls

Bust Your Butt Falls is a popular roadside swimming spot that features a natural waterslide and a good spot for cliff jumping. The boulders around the falls are always wet and slippery, so be sure to watch your step if you want to avoid living up to the waterfall’s name.

Dry Falls & Bridal Veil Falls

Address: US-64, Highlands, NC 28741

Just a short drive down Highway 64 from Bust Your Butt Falls is Dry Falls. Dry Falls is one of the few waterfalls that allows you to walk behind it without getting wet – hence its name. Since you’re able to see the waterfall from all angles, it’s easy to get some incredible photos here.

If you keep heading east along the Waterfall Byway, you’ll run into Bridal Veil Falls about a mile from Dry Falls. Until recently, Bridal Veil Falls was the only waterfall that you could drive behind. While you’re no longer allowed to take your car behind the falls, the road behind the falls makes this one of the most accessible falls along the Waterfall Byway.

Newfound Gap Road Scenic Drive

Distance: 35.7 miles
Drive Time: 1 hour, 3 minutes

Newfound Gap Road is the lowest drivable pass through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Driving the Gap has been compared to driving from Georgia to Maine because of the dramatic change in vegetation. At the bottom of the Gap, you’ll see plenty of cove hardwood and pine-oak. As you climb up through the mountains, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the fragrant pines and aspens typically found in New England.
