A Variety of Nantahala Experiences
Nantahala National Forest
Covering more than half a million acres, this expansive mountain forest shapes much of the landscape around Topton. Visitors come for hiking, rafting, fishing, and scenic drives that pass through river gorges and high ridgelines. Elevation changes create a wide mix of plant life and wildlife habitats. One of its most visited sections follows the Nantahala River Gorge, where trails and overlooks sit close to the water.
Nantahala River
The Nantahala River flows about 48 miles through western North Carolina and is a cornerstone outdoor attraction in the region. It’s a premier destination for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fly fishing, with Class II–III rapids challenging both beginners and experienced paddlers. The river winds through scenic gorges within the Nantahala National Forest and feeds into Fontana Lake, offering picnic spots, riverbank views, and opportunities for wildlife watching.

Nantahala Gorge
Nantahala Gorge is a scenic river canyon carved by the Nantahala River, known for its dramatic forest backdrop and outdoor recreation. The Gorge features calm stretches and challenging sections ideal for whitewater rafting, as well as peaceful spots for hiking, picnicking, and fishing. A scenic drive alongside the Gorge offers plenty of overlooks and roadside pull-offs to enjoy panoramic views of river and woodland landscapes year-round.
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
Preserved as a tribute to poet Joyce Kilmer, this protected forest contains one of the largest remaining stands of old-growth hardwoods in the eastern United States. Massive tulip poplars and towering oaks line an easy loop trail through the valley. Many trees exceed 100 feet in height and are several centuries old, creating a rare look at pre-settlement Appalachian forest conditions.
Blue Ridge Parkway
Stretching nearly 470 miles, this scenic roadway links the southern Appalachians with a continuous ribbon of overlooks, forests, and cultural sites. Drivers encounter frequent pull-offs with long-range mountain views, along with access to hiking trails, picnic areas, and historic landmarks. The route near western North Carolina is especially known for fall color displays. Designed for leisurely travel, the parkway maintains a lower speed to encourage sightseeing.
Cherohala Skyway
Running between North Carolina and Tennessee, this high-elevation byway climbs through two national forests with long stretches of undeveloped mountain terrain. Numerous overlooks provide views across forested ridges and open balds. The road reaches elevations above 5,000 feet, bringing cooler temperatures in summer. Trailheads and waterfall access points branch off the route, making it popular with both drivers and hikers.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Oconaluftee Entrance
Located near Cherokee, North Carolina, the Oconaluftee Entrance provides a welcoming gateway into Great Smoky Mountains National Park from the southern side. This area is known for open river valleys, preserved mountain farm buildings, and frequent elk activity in nearby fields. Visitors often begin at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, which offers exhibits, trail access, and direct entry to Newfound Gap Road.
Wayah Bald Lookout Tower
Wayah Bald Lookout Tower is a historic stone fire tower near Franklin, North Carolina, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
